Anorexia Nervosa Treatment & Support in Melbourne

Eating Disorder Treatment Melbourne

Compassionate, evidence-based support for anorexia, bulimia, and disordered eating

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental-health conditions that affect how a person thinks about food, body image, and self-worth. At The Three Seas Psychology, we provide a safe, understanding environment where recovery can begin.

Our experienced clinicians offer specialised therapy for Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and other forms of disordered eating. We combine evidence-based psychological treatment with warmth, respect, and an individualised approach to help clients rebuild a healthy relationship with food and their bodies.

Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are not about food alone, they often develop as complex responses to emotional distress, perfectionism, low self-esteem, or trauma. They can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, or background.

Without professional support, eating disorders can have severe physical and emotional consequences. Early intervention and tailored therapy greatly improve recovery outcomes.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa is a life-threatening eating disorder characterised by:

  • Intense fear of gaining weight
  • Extreme food restriction or avoidance

  • Distorted body image

  • Significant weight loss and malnutrition

Although most common in adolescence, anorexia can develop at any age. It often co-occurs with anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive traits. Treatment focuses on restoring physical health, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, and rebuilding self-esteem and body trust.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa involves cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours such as self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, or misuse of laxatives.

Those affected often appear outwardly healthy, which can delay diagnosis and support. Therapy helps clients:

  • Understand the emotional triggers behind binge-purge cycles

  • Break patterns of secrecy, shame, and guilt

  • Develop sustainable coping and self-regulation strategies

Causes and Contributing Factors

Eating disorders typically arise from a mix of biological, psychological, and social influences. Contributing factors may include:

  • Genetic or familial predisposition

  • Low self-esteem or perfectionism

  • Exposure to trauma or bullying

  • Societal and cultural pressures around appearance

  • Co-existing mental-health conditions such as anxiety or depression

Understanding these factors allows our clinicians to tailor therapy to each person’s experience and goals.

How We Help

Treatment is always collaborative and centred on the client’s needs. Depending on the presentation, therapy may involve:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E) – evidence-based therapy specifically for eating disorders

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – building flexibility and self-compassion

  • Schema Therapy – addressing long-standing belief patterns and emotional triggers

  • Mindfulness and Emotion Regulation – improving awareness and self-soothing skills

  • Family or carer guidance – supporting loved ones in understanding and maintaining recovery

  • Accessing Medicare Support (Eating Disorder Treatment Plans – EDTPs)

We also work alongside GPs, dietitians, and medical specialists to ensure integrated care when needed.
